Seelow – The Proud District Town with a Historical Heritage

Seelow, one of the smallest district towns in Germany, looks back on a long history dating back to 1252. The town, once located on important trade routes, has developed into a significant regional center over the centuries. Seelow is known for its eventful past, shaped by wars, reconstruction, and economic development. Particularly striking is the Battle of the Seelow Heights in 1945, which represents a significant chapter in the history of the Second World War.

In the 19th century, Seelow in the Oderland was given the nickname "Zickenseelow". This name, by no means derogatory, rather reflected the rural character of the town. As keeping goats was tax-free at that time, many of the more modestly living citizens opted for these animals as milk providers. The numerous goats shaped the townscape and contributed to the name "Zickenseelow" becoming established in popular parlance.

The Billy Goat – A Symbol of Seelow's Character

A symbol of Seelow's character is the proud billy goat, which goes back to the legend of "Zickenseelow". The story tells of a farmer who wanted to drive his goats beyond the town limits. But the animals stopped on the hill and refused to move on – as if they knew that Seelow was their home. Thus, today the billy goat stands for steadfastness, local identity, and the unwavering resilience of the people of Seelow.

With its unique history, its committed citizens, and the connection of tradition and progress, Seelow remains a vibrant place that honors its past and simultaneously looks to the future.
